CHAPTER TWO Writing Against Time Students Composing “Legacies” in a History Conscious City Elizabeth Ervin and Dan Collins In the fall of 1998, the administration of Cape Fear Community College (CFCC), in conjunction with the CFCC Foundation, determined that it needed a campus focal point—an identifying marker that simultaneously distinguished it from other schools in the area and established its affiliation with downtown Wilmington, North Carolina, where CFCC is located.
And students, aware of their own histories with and responses to this greater discourse, can contribute to ongoing urban conversations. CONCLUSION As we close this chapter, we find ourselves still disagreeing about how Birmingham should be represented and how such representations might influence writing processes and the teaching of writing. We have grown more comfortable with our varied interpretations of Birmingham, though, and in designing the writing program at UAB, we consciously accounted for the mythologized presence of the city and the diverse individuals and communities who live here.
In the final section of this chapter, we illustrate three ways in which we devised our composition program to help students locate their own understandings of the city in which they live and work, as well as determine how they wish to participate in the shaping of Birmingham’s past, present, and future identities. Our discussion takes the form of “principles” that we believe encourage students to become active makers of their own identities and contributors to the conversations within and about their urban communities.
