The paper industry was flourishing, and its role in Finland’s economic growth became essential. For Aalto’s career the 1930s meant a breakthrough in many ways. He gained international reputation with his wooden furniture as well as with his first modern buildings, the Turun Sanomat Building and the Paimio Tuberculosis Sanatorium. Aalto also helped convey the image of Finland to the international scene with his exhibition pavilions for the Paris International Exhibition of 1936–37 and for the New York World Fair of 1939.
In the early 1930s Aalto still favored standardization in design, but he soon began to strive for a more humane approach, and nature and its biological standardization became the main model for his architecture. From the mid-1930s onwards he brought wood into the material palette of his buildings, softening and enriching the stark white volumes.
