(2012) Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression (New York: Guildford Press). 2 Beyond Mindfulness: An Other-centred Paradigm Caroline Brazier Over the last two decades, there has been a notable growth of interest in mindfulness methods. From being the preserve of a few, mindfulness has come into mainstream popularity and established itself in Britain and elsewhere as a therapeutic method used for a variety of mental health problems and physical ailments.

In his introduction to the Sutta, Thanissaro Bhikkhu (2011) suggests that, rather than offering four different areas of meditation practice, the Satipatthana Sutta presents, in fact, one practice, and, in its four sections, shows how the practitioner might achieve increasing levels of depth within their practice. In other words, in mindfulness practice, according to the Satipatthana, here and now awareness of the body is the first step, and as practice deepens, the whole Buddhist understanding of the nature of experience is revealed through the lens of that practice.

This is how a monk remains focused on the body in and of itself (Maha-Satipatthana Sutta DN22; trans. Thanissaro, 2011). It is probably useful here to note that ideas of non-attachment and separation in Buddhism do not imply psychological distancing in the sense of repression. What is intended is that the sense of identification and ownership is to be relinquished, so that the body or other phenomena are experienced more directly, without the colouration of self-interest. When a person is self-invested in the body, they may, in fact, have all manner of distorted views towards it.
