Some chromosomal disorders can result in significant and even lethal physical abnormalities, while others may not: Some make no difference at all. Even if the abnormality is relatively common, a positive diagnosis often reveals nothing about the severity of the disorder, which may be expressed very differently in different individuals. Above all, it is important to realize that a normal karyotype means only that the chromosomes are structurally normal; it does not rule out the possibility of genetic disorders caused by mutations in gene sequences.

The most obvious use for genetic information at present is to influence treatment and health-promoting behavior, particularly when the evidence for the efficacy of intervention is strong. It is known, for example, that a child with cystic fibrosis is more lrkely than other children to need a special diet or pancreatic enzymes to gain weight. A young child with sickle cell anemia and a fever is at much greater risk of overwhelming bacterial infection and therefore needs closer evaluation and follow-up and often powerful antibiotics.

IVF success rates, meaning that the procedure has resulted in the birth of a baby, are about 20 percent for each initiated cycle, although the numbers reported vary widely. In any event, the rate of success is highly dependent on the causes of infertility. Younger women tend to have greater success than older ones. IVF has been widely embraced as a new way to create babies for those who are infertile. In recent years, its uses have been extended beyond infertility to avoiding passing deleterious genes to one’s children and to giving children certain specific traits.
